How often should you clean your home?
By the Focus Cleaning team · Published
The short answer
There's no single right schedule: the right rhythm depends on how many people live in the home, pets, allergies and how much time is spent there. As a starting point, many households keep the kitchen and bathroom tidy day to day and do a fuller clean weekly or fortnightly, then adjust. Let the signs guide you: if a room needs attention before the next clean, clean it more often.

Before you start
What you'll need
- An honest look at how your home is used
- A simple calendar or checklist
- Basic supplies: all-purpose cleaner, microfibre cloths, vacuum and mop
Safety first
- If someone at home has dust mite allergy or asthma, ASCIA's allergen minimisation advice (for example washing bedding weekly in hot water) is worth reading.
- Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia or other cleaning products. Some combinations release toxic gas.
- Keep the room ventilated: open a window and run the exhaust fan while you work.
- Wear gloves, read the label on any product, and follow its directions.
- Store products in their original labelled containers, out of reach of children and pets.
Check the surface
- Who lives here: more people, children, pets or working from home usually means cleaning more often.
- Allergies or asthma: dust and bedding may need more frequent attention.
- Bathrooms without good ventilation tend to need more frequent attention to stay ahead of moisture and mould.
Step by step
- 1
Start with a suggested rhythm
Pick weekly or fortnightly for the main clean: bathrooms, kitchen surfaces, dusting, vacuuming and mopping.
- 2
Watch the bathroom
If the bathroom builds up residue or marks before the next clean, consider cleaning it weekly, with a quick squeegee of the shower glass in between.
- 3
Watch the kitchen
If benches, the cooktop or the sink feel grimy within a few days, add a quick daily wipe after cooking.
- 4
Watch the floors
If you notice grit underfoot or pet hair building up, vacuum high-traffic areas more often than the rest.
- 5
Watch the bedding
Change and wash bed linen regularly. If someone has dust mite allergy, ASCIA suggests washing it weekly in hot water (above 60°C).
- 6
Rotate the bigger jobs
Spread jobs like the oven, rangehood filter, windows and tracks, grout and under furniture across the year, when they start to look like they need it.
- 7
Review after a month
If the home feels messy before each clean, increase the frequency; if it still looks good, you may be able to space cleans out.
What the Focus team recommends
A rhythm you can actually keep beats an ambitious schedule that falls apart. Many households find a little daily tidying plus a regular fuller clean keeps things manageable, with the bigger jobs rotated so they never all fall due at once.
Questions
Is fortnightly cleaning enough?
For many smaller or tidier households it is, especially with some daily tidying. If rooms need attention before the next clean, weekly may suit you better.
How often should bathrooms be cleaned?
It depends on use and ventilation. A bathroom used every day often benefits from a weekly clean; if residue or mould appears sooner, clean more often and look at ventilation.
How often should I wash bed linen?
Regularly. For people with dust mite allergy, ASCIA recommends washing sheets and pillowcases weekly in hot water (above 60°C).
